Spring Clean your negative thought patterns and find the true YOU

Spring is upon us and there is always a feeling of renewed energy and the possibilities of growth. It has made me think about the things that hold us back and the resistance that prevents us achieving our goals
I talked last newsletter about guilt, shame and regret, the shadows deep within us that some clients have described as their emotional suffering.
So at points in my life I have found myself asking “Why don’t I believe in myself?”
When I have asked this question not only to myself but to many of my clients the answer always appears to be the same.  “I’ve always been that way”
Carl Rogers the American psychologist describes this belief system as Conditions of Worth. As we grow authoritarian figures within our lives may only deliver what we need, when they believe we have been good or worthy enough, rather than just because we need it.  Rogers calls this conditional positive regard
Because we need this positive regard these conditions are very powerful and over time influences our behaviour and belief system.  It programmes us to only have self regard or value for ourselves when we meet the standards others have of us, rather than working towards our own self confidence, potential and actualisation.  If these standards are not linked to our ideas and values we find ourselves unable to meet these and in turn our confidence, self esteem and worth is affected.
So is there a way we can reprogramme our responses & even start to believe in ourselves?
The first steps to identify are:
1. That these negative thought patterns are just that. Patterns we learn and listen to over the years that in fact do not show who we truly are.
2. That there is no such thing as failure but a gap between where you are and where you want to be, so knowing this anything is possible and we can really challenge those negative thoughts and achieve our goals.
3. Its about showing up and committing rather than allowing our thoughts and fears to hold us back which will ensure we move forward
Eckart Tolle compares the effect of negative thoughts and obsessive thinking by saying “It is when we are trapped in incessant streams of compulsive thinking that the universe really disintegrates for us, and we lose the ability to sense the interconnectedness of all that exists.”
“Sometimes letting things go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on.” (A New Earth: Awakening to your Life's Purpose)
